Carpet Bomb! My most rewarding listening experience so far this year.
Here is an album that with its ebb and flow and distinctive atmosphere I found to be immediately engaging. An incessant tight strong drum beat greets you front and center. Utterly appealing guitars riffs waft in from the left and right channels. Lead vocals are hushed and subdued yet firm. Steady, strumming passages languidly roll by only to be beautifully punctuated by lead guitar, accordion, piano or sax. High echoing background vocals reaffirm chorus lines and add to the atmospherics. Emerging from underneath this beautifully arranged sound is an air of tragedy. Moods darken at times and lyrics have a barbed edge to them. Fear not though because here the tragedy is not the all absorbing “Alt. Country” kind. Here one becomes a detached observer skirting things like the “heat, blood and sweat of a car crash” (Track 7). The rhythms remain steady, they tranquilize and keep the heart rate in check. The mood stays …cool. Here is some “Alt. Rock” of the “Cool Tragedy” kind.

Cheers

Finally released the long awaited debut album “Carpet Bomb”

Velvedene came together in 2002 and are based in Melbourne, Australia. The line-up consists of James Weldon (lead vox, guitars), Cameron Stone (drums), Sean Allwood (guitars) and Sasha Stella (keys).
Dark, humerous, sometimes poingent, their debut CD “Carpet Bomb” reveals a range of influences such as Lloyd Cole, the Church and Lou Reed among others.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words of support (and constructive critiques) of our song for the socceroos “Kickin around the World”. Good luck to the winners Freedom of Thought, it should give their careers a bit of a boost. Also a big thank you to Melissa Mahoney for giving the song a plug on Spencer Howson’s morning show (ABC QLD). And thanks to Spencer for playing it!

Check out Melissa’s great songs here.

We’ve had one last go recording our soccer song, I think this is our best shot. Thanks to Gary Boehm for guitar and Derek Rowe for the backing vox. Also special thanks to John Ruberto at Crystal Mastering, he has done some nice work with it.

As this song is different in style from our other material, we are hoping to make it into a bit of a fundraiser for the earthquake victims in Java. Feel free to download the song.
